Job Description
The New Art Center Summer Program offers opportunities for teenagers
who are interested in learning about childcare and arts programming.
Counselor positions are paid positions with plenty of training
and hands-on experience.
Counselors lead groups of 10-12 children throughout their daily activities. The most important parts of a Counselor’s job are making sure that students are safe, entertained and involved in daily activities. Counselors are responsible for keeping track of each student in their group and making sure they’re on-time to classes. Counselors must abide by the rules of the program and serve as role models for students. They are expected to assist students who need extra help, to help Instructors with classroom management, and to notify Instructors or the Program Director about any unsafe or inappropriate behavior. Ideal candidates are very outgoing, energetic, proactive, with a good sense of humor.
Eligibility
At the time of employment, applicant
must be at least 15 years old and must be eligible for a valid
work permit The internship requires a minimum commitment two week-long sessions.
Daily required attendance is between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. plus a 30 minute staff meeting each week.
To Apply for a Position:
1. The applicant (counselor) may contact Kate Wisnioski himself/herself
with any questions. Parents may call with questions, but ultimately
this is a job application process in which the potential candidate
should take the following steps independently.
2. Fill out a Counselor employment application
and return it to Kate Wisnioski at 61 Washington Park, Newtonville,
MA 02460. You may use additional paper if necessary. It is important
to select the weeks you are available to work. Select only the
weeks that you know you will be in town and available Monday through
Friday 9:00am - 3:30pm each day. You must commit to at least two
weeks, but may work additional weeks for an equivalent (pro-rated)
stipend. The application includes a section where you list people
as references. Generally, these cannot be immediate family and
should be people whom you have babysat for or who can attest to
your ability to work with children. As a couresy, it is a good
idea to let your references know that you're listing them on an
application and they may receive a phone call.
3. During this informal interview, the Assistant Education Director
will ask you why you want the position and why you think you will
make a good counselor.
5.After all interviews are completed, the Assistant Education
Director will select seven counselors for each of the eight weeks
of the program, noting that each counselor must commit to a minimum
of two weeks.
