Kernan is co-founder of Mixit Print Studio, a professional printmaking studio in Davis Square. She is known for building multiple layers of ink, often using themes rooted in nature. Her work was most recently featured at Soprafina Gallery in Boston, MA and Jason McCoy Gallery in New York City. Says Kernan, "Working at the interface between printmaking and painting, I use large scale woodblocks in unorthodox ways as a transfer tool to build images layer by layer in a painterly process of controlled accident. No longer a purist, I exploit any available tool or means to transfer color and form to surface. Interruption and interference with the 'perfect transfer' are integral to the process." To see Catherine create her beautiful work, and to dive in to your own printmaking process, join her for her upcoming workshop, In Pursuit of the Wayward Muse April 8th and 15th.
