This year, New Art will participate in Juneteenth celebrations hosted by FORJ NNHS (Families Organizing for Racial Justice at Newton North High School) at the Walnut Street side of Newton North High School. Vendors including Black-owned businesses, food trucks, performers, DJs, kids’ activities, and art exhibits will make this a fantastic family day out, so mark your calendars.
The New Art Center is hosting a performance of Frederick Douglass’s “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” This performance is a part of the Reading Frederick Douglass Together Program, funded by a grant from Mass Humanities. It will feature 4 BIPOC performers from a variety of ages and gender identities performing different parts of this speech as well as art making activities and educational materials. New Art will be partnering with Historic Newton to provide an in-depth look at the speech and context for the reading.
New Art is looking forward to participating alongside:
- Gianna Burgess
- David Stamps
- Massachusetts Association of Haitian Parents
- Fun Factor (Activities for Kids)
- Gourmet Kreyol (Food Truck)
- Tipping Cow (Ice Cream Truck)
In the event of incliment weather, the event at Newton North High School will be cancelled and New Art Center’s Juneteenth Reading of Frederick Douglas will be present indoors at the New Art Center’s Washington Park location (61 Washington Park, Newton, MA 02460).
