How do you catch the attitude of that sassy cardinal? How do paint the whites of the snowy owl? In this brief winter session, explore how composition, loose sketching, black and colored inks — plus insights into avian “character attitude”— intersect to make compelling portraits of birds in their environments. Go on assignment from your kitchen window for live observation drawings! We’ll use field guides, bird bone studies, eggs, feathers and roast chickens as our models for home study. You’ll be ready for the spring migrations after studying masterworks of John Muir Laws, traditional Asian ink masters, Bruno Liljefours, Andrew Wyeth, James Audubon, Eric Ennion, Darren Woodhood, and Barry Van Dusen. Some previous experience with watercolor & nature drawings recommended. See website for materials list.
