About the Exhibition

You Can’t Teach Art: Students of John Murray exhibition features the work of New Art Center’s long time faculty member, John Murray, and a curated selection of his students. Over the past 16 years John Murray has taught painting, drawing, and printmaking classes at the New Art Center and has guided, encouraged, and influenced more than 300 artists.

This show brings together the work of John Murray and 29 artists who have studied under him – highlighting the art making relationship and influence of teacher, student, and peer. With the variety of imagery and colors throughout all of the pieces, the collection is unified by distinct and excited mark making. From oil painting to collage, charcoal drawing and more, each artist showcases his or her visual dialog while utilizing fluid lines, high contrast imagery, and unexpected juxtapositions of shapes.
