Grey Held

Grey Held is a poet, a painter, an arts activist, and a collaborator.

As a visual artist — Grey creates poem-posters that blend the words of a poem with texture, color, line, and image–into something visually rich enough to entice viewers into reading poetry, both his own and those of one of his favorite poets–Emily Dickinson.

As a poet — Grey is a recipient of an NEA Fellowship in Creative Writing. Three books of his poetry have been published and he teaches a weekly workshop — The Poetry Round Table.

As an arts activist — he strives to bring poetry out of the book and into public spaces and has, for the past six years, created public poetry installations (in Newton) that connect contemporary poets (at all different levels of their career) with a wider audience.

As a collaborator — He has taught “collaborative drawing” in many venues, including New Art Center. He also works with his wife, Leslie Held, an award winning costume designer to create whimsical fabric collages, many of which were exhibited recently at New Art Center’s Holzwasser Gallery.

He holds an MFA degree from Tyler School of Art and a BS from MIT. Grey has taught at the New Art Center since 2016.
