Inclusive Ceramics Program for the Clearway School

The New Art Center offers a 15 week/1.5 hour ceramics handbuilding program for 6 middle school students in a partnership with the Clearway School. Students are transported to New Art from the Clearway School and are accompanied by their classroom teacher. Handbuilding projects vary each term as students learn and advance their skills. This class is taught by an art instructor hired solely to work with this group.

Inclusive Arts Program for Adults

The New Art Center offers a weekly class, led by a licensed MSW art therapist, for 20 adults with developmental disabilities. This annual program includes up to 60 hours of private art activities and instruction in up to 30 weekly class meetings of 2 hours. Projects are designed for individual students based on their artistic interests and abilities and may work in a variety of materials and media including: collage, drawing with markers or pastels, acrylic painting, and mixed media. The instructor, who is an art instructor who specializes in working with adults with disabilities, fosters group interactions as the students share observations about the progress of their art, and their finished pieces, as well as conversations about their personal experiences and interests. The class size is usually around 10 students. New Art partners with two residential group homes in Newton who refer the participants, and the Brigham House, where the art activities take place.
