Newtonville, MA – New Art Center has partnered with Chestnut Hill Square to display The Block, a created by Liz Helfer. This unique art exhibit is a combination of windshield glass, plexiglass and steel. Liz Helfer creates sculptures out of her studio in Waltham, MA. Steeped in metalwork, her recent work emphasizes sustainable sculpture practices, using recycled and upcycled materials.
“It’s easy to think of places in relation to our own bodies, in travel distances and amenities, landmarks, and how they make us feel, which is not often in alignment with boundaries drawn on a map. The thirteen sculptures that make up The Block uses the lines of the assessor’s map to create reflective barriers that are intentionally enigmatic, based on the property lines of Chestnut Hill Square and surrounding land parcels, forming a disassembled puzzle of this place,” says artist Liz Helfer.
“The Block is a playful visual puzzle that explores how boundaries fit together to create a cohesive whole. Liz invites viewers to engage with the individual sculptures to think about the points of connection among them. We’re grateful to Liz and the entire team at Chestnut Hill Square for bringing creative exploration through public art to our community,” explains Rose Perriello, Exhibition Coordinator of the New Art Center.

Liz Helfer Studios is located in Waltham, MA, where Liz reuses industrial materials to create sculptures that address our environmental peril. Liz’s training is in foundry processes, focusing on different metals’ historical complexity and perceived value. Liz has traveled widely to create sculptures across the United States and Europe, always landing back in New England.
