General

Adult ceramics students taking classes held in the New Art Center building have a shelf to store clay, tools and works in progress. Make sure your name is clearly marked on your shelf. Please do not store clay, works in progress or other personal items on top of the shelves.

  • Adult students may bring their own small tools.
  • All students will receive one 25 pound bag of clay, included in tuition. Up to 3 additional bags of clay can be purchased for $35 each.
  • All work to be fired must be made at the New Art Center, using clay purchased from the New Art Center.
  • Students working at the New Art Center may only purchase clay from their instructor during class time.
  • Exact change, check or credit card accepted. No IOU’s. 
  • Bottled glaze and underglaze may be used in small quantities only. Adult Students using them on a regular basis will be asked to purchase their own.
  • The slab roller is available for use during class time. For safety concerns it will be locked on the weekends and during open studio. Use of the equipment and materials requires an orientation by your instructor.

Cleaning, Health and Safety

  • Our studios also depend on the participation of Students and Teachers to create a good working environment for everyone.
  • Please do not move wheels, tables or large equipment. 
  • Students must thoroughly clean all wheels, work surfaces and equipment they have used following our New Art Center safety and  cleaning protocols that are posted in the studios.
  • Allow extra time for clean-up.  Students are responsible for leaving any tools, surfaces equipment and materials clean and returned to their proper place after use. Students may be asked to clean-up in shifts to avoid congestion at sinks.
  • All sanding must be done outside the building. Please refrain from blowing dust off your projects.
  • No food or drink in the studios, except a water bottle

Open Studio

Open Studio is time for students to practice what they have learned in class. It is available to adults who are currently registered in an adult ceramics class that takes place in the New Art Center building. Open Studio time is by appointment only. Open Studio is uninstructed. If you need extra help with a project, please save questions for your teacher during your class time. Be careful with any equipment that you use. Use of equipment and materials requires permission or an orientation before use. If you notice a problem with equipment, stop using it immediately. Please be cleaned up and ready to leave at the end of open studio time.

Firing

  • All work to be fired must be made at the New Art Center and within the session that students are registered. Clay must be purchased from the New Art Center.
  • SIGN all your work before firing.
  • Work to be fired must be dry, unbroken and structurally sound.
  • To protect kiln shelves, work must have unglazed bottoms and unglazed side areas of at least ¼ inches from the bottom.
  • Work should not exceed 15 ” in any direction.
  • Please try to keep up on your glazing and complete work within the session it was created. Large pieces may take longer to get fired.
  • The New Art center cannot store bisque longer than 90 days
  • Glazed purchased outside of the New Art Center may be used only with the approval of the studio manager.
  • The New Art Center is an educational facility. We cannot accommodate high volume work or production pottery.
