Newtonville, MA – The New Art Center, a nonprofit community art education space announces the opening of a new exhibit in its New Art Corridor Gallery, as part of its BIPOC Curatorial Program.

Guess Who I Saw Today?” features the narrative work of three gifted Boston-based artists: DaNice Marshall, Matt Brackett, and Ivan Brens and is curated by Ashleigh Dior Coren. These artists incorporate subjects such as history, familial bonds, and the natural world to reveal the nuances of the creative process. Their work affirms art’s role in providing critical insight into how we examine the past and the present.

This show poses the question: what is the relationship between craftsmanship and the expression of the human condition in art? I’d like to encourage viewers of the show to look beyond what they see,” said Coren. “Consider the artist’s hand, the format and materials used, or what may have inspired a particular art object. How do all of these things help us, the viewer, gain a better understanding of what is being communicated?”

Leading up to the opening reception, New Art Center will be working with Coren to bring the public’s input into the exhibition, asking individuals to take a moment to reflect on those who cross their paths daily – the people they know, and those they don’t. Participants stationed across Greater Boston will gather names and locations of those on similar paths between September 16 and September 21.

“The collaborative art piece is a playful take on the title of the exhibition. It will allow audiences throughout Greater Boston to engage with the show in a way that encourages a sense of community,” said Rose Perriello, exhibition coordinator for the New Art Center.

The exhibition will remain open until October 31, 2023 with an opening reception featuring the shared public art contribution on September 21, 2023 in the New Art Corridor Gallery. The New Art Corridor is supported by The Village Bank, the Mass Cultural Council and Mark Development. The BIPOC Curatorial Program is funded by The Village Bank, Mass Cultural Council, the Newton Cultural Council and The Harmony Foundation

About the New Art Center’s BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Curatorial Program: The program is designed to offer the opportunity for guest curators of color to curate exhibitions within New Art’s ongoing Exhibition Program. The BIPOC Curatorial Program will enable curators who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color to develop and share exhibitions that spark dialogue, and share personal vision and personal experiences through curation. We hope this opportunity will create much needed dialogue in our own community to counter systemic racism.
