Newton, MA– Join New Art Center in a fun, collaborative artwork & happening as part of the exhibition “Guess Who I Saw Today,” curated by Ashleigh Coren and featuring the work of artists DaNice Marshall, Ivan Brens, and Matt Brackett. The opening of the exhibition will take place at New Art Center Trio Corridor Gallery Thursday, September 21, 2023 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

We are asking individuals to take a moment to reflect on those who cross their paths daily – the people we know, and those we don’t. Participants stationed across Greater Boston will gather names and locations of those on similar paths between September 16 and September 21. The fragments of info collected will be assembled into a collaborative artwork in the upstairs of the Trio Gallery and on display the night of the opening reception. Be a part of the work! Contact Rose Perriello to sign up!

About the Artists

Ashleigh Coren (she/her) is a museum interpreter in Washington, D.C. Her writing has been published in The Journal of American Folklore, Viewfinder: Reflecting Upon Museum Education, and the International Review of African American Art. She also serves on the Board for the Museum Education Roundtable.

Ivan Brens is a self-taught painter born in the Dominican Republic. He studied printmaking and photography at the University of Massachusetts and sculpture in Mass College of Art in Boston. The artwork has an emphasis upon distortion of the human form resembling the struggle and distress for freedom.

DaNice Marshall started painting abstracts, mostly to watch the paint dry – before discovering portraiture as a way for her to paint the stories that she could no longer write.

Matt Brackett uses techniques of traditional painting to explore themes such memory, wonder and menace through a contemporary lens. His imagery, while realist in appearance, is derived from completely artificial constructs.
