About the Exhibition
This installation is an exploration of fleeting moments in life that resemble the momentary movements of dance, featuring large figure paintings on reflective mylar that are designed to inspire the audience to experiment with movement, reflection, and light.
Large reflective figurative paintings interact with the passing observer and continue to evolve and change for each viewer. The visitors are invited to photograph the mylar with their cell phones to catch their own reflections playing with the brush strokes and light. The use of reflective mylar creates infinite interpretations and serves as an icon for self-reflection.
The installation’s opening performance will consist of the creation of a new painting by Zhanna, a dance performance by Carey, projection, video, music, and light. The final work will directly reflect the process through which the installation was created, with painter and dancer taking constant inspiration from each other. Afterwards, the viewers will be given the opportunity to create their own improvisations with paint, mylar, lights and music.
About the Artists
Zhanna Cantor is a painter and a teacher born in Kiev, Ukraine at the time of the former Soviet Union. She holds a BFA from Carnegie Mellon and a MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts / Tufts University and teaches painting at New Art Center.
She has had recent solo shows at Lab Central in Cambridge and Newton Free Library as well as exhibiting her work in numerous juried shows including Galatea Fine Art, Boston, Beacon Gallery, Boston, Brookline Art Center, Brookline, Danforth Museum, Framingham, and Concord Center For The Visual Arts.
Carey McKinley is a Boston-based multi-disciplinary teaching artist. McKinley earned an M.F.A. in Performance Art – Dance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a B.A. in Psychology from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. As an avid collaborator and connector, her artwork and productions meld dance, visual art, theatre and experience.
McKinley has received dance commissions from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and The Harvard Graduate School of Design; artist residencies from Boston Center for the Arts and Earthdance’s E/Merge; awards from The Univ. of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Green St. Studios; and invited guest artist for DanceNOW Boston, UMass Boston, and Harvard-Radcliffe Modern Dance Company. Her work has been presented at Bard College, Mass Audubon Visual Arts Center, Mobius, and the Dance Complex.
