The New Art Center Announces Holi as its next Community Cultural Day

Sunday, April 7, 12 – 4 PM, free and open to the public

Newtonville, MA – The New Art Center, a nonprofit community art education space, announces its next Community Culture Day on April 7, 2024 to celebrate the Hindu festival of colors, Holi.

The New Art Center will have indoor and outdoor art-making activities, a food truck provided by Grub Guru, music throughout the day, a performance by Swasti Bhargava, and Anvita Natyalaya dance school, followed by a live workshop where the kids in the audience can join in to learn dancing couple of steps. The event will conclude with an outdoor color play where guests have the opportunity to participate in the very fun (and messy) tradition of throwing organic color powder at each other.

“Hosting and enabling the Holi festival at the New Art center, is a huge opportunity and encouragement for Newton community Indian American children. They get to perform in our own community showcasing their talent while feeling the support from their environment,” said Mari Muthuswamy, director of Anvita Natyalaya dance school.

This event is one in a series of community cultural days the New Art Center will host in 2024, which celebrate the holidays and traditions of the many diverse cultures represented in the local community. Art-making activities connected to the traditions, as well as musical and dance performances, are the focus of the event. This year, New Art Center has partnered with community member Janhavi Wadwhani, and guest artist Monica Srivastava, to accurately portray and appropriately celebrate different cultures.

Community Cultural Days are supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Newton Cultural Council, and the Harmony Foundation.

About the New Art Center: The New Art Center is a non-profit community art education space which offers everyone, at all levels of ability, exceptional opportunities to make, exhibit, view, think about and talk about art.
