DESCRIPTION

The New Art Center of Newton, MA is seeking ceramics instructors with teaching experience to lead classes for adults, teens, or kids. We’re looking for those with strong knowledge and practice in hand-building, wheel throwing, or sculptural approaches. Student projects can range from individual to collaborative, technique-based or culturally focused. If you have a passion for the arts and are looking for a supportive community to share your expertise, this is the place. 

For those working with youth, we produce weekly courses, day camps, week-long vacation camps, and ten-week summer arts sessions. Hours for Teen + Child Vacation Camps are 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, daily or weekly.  After-school programs generally run from 3:00 – 7:30 PM, Monday – Friday. Substitute teaching and Saturday classes are also available. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Training in ceramic studio practice, with 2-3 years of experience in wheel-throwing or handbuilding with adults, teens, or kids preferred. For those seeking more experience, please inquire about our teaching assistant positions during vacation camps. 

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Ability to create engaging lessons and activities for ceramic art instruction
  • Willing to adapt lessons as needed for a variety of language levels, abilities, and learning styles
  • Create a responsive, fun, and safe environment for all ages
  • Consistent, reliable and punctual attendance
  • Be courteous, informative, responsive, and professional at all times
  • Be the primary supervisor at all times during instruction hours and become familiar with any medical concerns, allergies, or other needed accommodations

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Able to achieve day to day expectations in the class (Wheel throw day 1, trimming day 2 etc.)
  • Able to adhere to daily expectations of studio maintenance and student clean up
  • Able to set goals for student work completed by the end of a week (1 bowl, 1 hand-build, etc.)

COMPENSATION

Starting rate for new ceramic instructors is $25-31 per hour based on teaching experience. Parking is available onsite or on an adjacent street.  Lunch breaks are provided for teachers working during full-day vacation camps. Ceramic instructors report to Julie Fox, Manager of the Ceramics Program.
