The New Art Center operates several galleries committed to bringing contemporary art to the community. We have two gallery spaces located at 61 Washington Park, as well as satellite galleries in the area. If you are interested in showing work in one of our galleries, please view our calls for artists.
Main Gallery exhibitions range from cutting-edge curatorial projects selected through our Curatorial Opportunity Program, to exhibitions featuring community partners such as the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s artists fellows and the Newton Art Association, to our annual student and faculty exhibition, The Creative Process.
Holzwasser Gallery exhibitions provide New Art Center students, faculty, staff, and volunteers the opportunity to present their current work in a professional gallery. The Holzwasser Gallery exhibition program enhances the learning available in our studios and enlivens the conversation about teaching, learning, and participating in the arts. The Holzwasser Gallery was created in 1991 due to a generous donation from Mary Holzwasser (1912-2003), an artist, student, New Art Center board member, and lifelong patron of the arts.
This year’s Holzwasser Gallery juror is Sam Toabe, a curator and art historian based in Boston, Massachusetts. He is the Gallery Director at the University Hall Gallery for the Art Department, as well as the Director of Arts on the Point, at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Toabe received his M.A. in the History of Art and Architecture and Museum Studies from Boston University in 2015 and a B.F.A. from the Studio for Interrelated Media at The Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2011. His research and writing focuses on alternative curatorial practices across a variety of periods and geographies (looking specifically at artist curated exhibitions and events), revisionist art histories, and the advancement of cultural plurality in our global, visual lexicons. Between 2013 and 2016, Toabe acted as the Assistant Director and subsequent Associate Director at Samsøñ – an internationally recognized commercial art gallery in Boston’s South End. He has contributed to over 50 exhibitions, with supporting roles at institutions such as the Yuan Art Museum in Beijing, the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston, and Brandeis University, among others.
The New Art Center is pleased to display work of faculty and students at the offices of Freedman Healthcare LLC, and the Newton Highlands and Newtonville branches of Brookline Bank. Applications for these satellite galleries are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed in November and April. Learn more about submitting.
