Our summer camp kicks off with the theme “Festival of Freedom” where students explore the work of three Black contemporary artists Deborah Roberts, Kimmy Cantrell and Joyce C. Scott, makers who work in cut paper collage, clay, and fiber arts. There is a special one-day class on Monday, June 19 for kids. Join us!

New Art Center is also participating in the 2023 Newton Juneteenth Celebration at Hyde Community Center on June 19, 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. There will be food, music, dance, and story-telling.

Lastly, New Art Center teen mural instructor and painter Destiny Palmer is leading a panel discussion at Mass College of Art on Thursday, June 15 as part of a pre-Juneteenth celebration called Embrace Boston, focused around a new public sculpture by artist Hank Willis Thomas.

Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. June 19 is the anniversary of the order, issued by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, proclaiming freedom for enslaved African Americans in Texas.
