IN A NEW ART CENTER EXHIBITION, BLACK PHOTOGRAPHERS EXPLORE THE ACT OF PETITION AND INTERCESSION
Opening Reception on January 18, 2024 is Free and Open to the Public

Newton, MA—An exhibition of Boston-area African American photographers will be featured in INTERCESSION, at the New Art Corridor Gallery at 245 Walnut Street in Newton MA.  The showcase, which opens on MLK Day Monday, January 15 and runs through March 3, 2024, highlights Black photographers who employ light to bridge, call attention, and to disrupt. The works actively engage new ways of seeing, believing and moving in the world. Artists include Philip Keith, Lauren Miller, Alonso Nichols, and Sam Williams. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, January 18 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

By definition, intercession means to act or interpose on behalf of someone in difficulty or trouble, as by pleading or petition: to intercede; to attempt to reconcile differences between; mediate. “I wanted an expansive theme that could speak to the times, but also allow space for the ways artists engage the tension between forms, between people, and within the self, ” says Reggie Woolery, Director of Education at New Art, who is also curating the exhibition. In addition to contemporary photography, there will be a selection of historical images of prominent African Americans living in Newton, MA during the 1800s.

This exhibition is part of New Art Center’s BIPOC Curatorial Program , which enables Black, Indigenous, and People of Color to develop exhibitions that spark dialogue as well as share their personal vision and experiences. Other exhibitions in the series have included: Guess Who I Saw Today, featuring the work of DaNice Marshall, Ivan Brens, and Matt Brackett curated by Ashleigh Coren. The exhibition ASWAT : أصوات (Arabic word for voices) curated by Joelle Tomb gave visibility and elevated the voices and perspectives of Arab Women.

The New Art Corridor Gallery is sponsored by Mass Cultural Council, Village Bank, and Mark Development. New Art’s BIPOC Curatorial Program is supported by Newton Cultural Council, Village Bank, and Harmony Foundation.
