Newtonville, MA – The New Art Center, a nonprofit community art education space announces the opening of a new exhibit in its New Art Corridor Gallery, as part of its BIPOC Curatorial Program.

ASWAT, the Arabic word meaning “voices,” features work by women who identify with the Arab region in a range of media including paintings, drawings, mixed media, and photography. Curated by Joëlle Tomb with Sara Mraish-Demeter as Guest Programming Curator, the exhibition seeks to give visibility and elevate the voices and perspectives of Arab Women.

“This exhibition features an international collective of artists, the majority are women,” said Joëlle Tomb. “The group, both male and female artists, were interested in themes related to the lives and experiences of women from the Middle East Region. ASWAT is a place of encounter for all cultures with shared experiences and different journeys.”

Artists featured in this exhibition include Rania Matar, Sandra Tomb, Joëlle Tomb, Mohamad Tassabehji, Sara Mraish-Demeter, Peri Ozker, Amale “Amelle” Elia, Sami Wakim, Rebecca Wakim, Tala Abunuwar, Dzovig Arnelian, Aya Abu Hawash, Raya Shanawani, Masha Keryan, and Aya Abdulnour. Examples of their work, artist statements and bios are available here.

“This collection of work amplifies the voices of local artists from the Arab region and sparks conversation about femininity, identity, and the power of lineage,” said Rose Perriello, exhibition coordinator for the New Art Center.

The exhibition will remain open until April 30, 2023 with an artist talk held on April 4 in the New Art Corridor Gallery and will be free and open to the public. The New Art Center’s BIPOC Program is sponsored by the Harmony Foundation and Cambridge Savings Bank.
