Dates: 10/22
Details: Sunday, 1 Session
Times: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
The first part focuses on aesthetics, where we will learn how to create beautiful papel picado (paper cutouts) and Cempasuchíl paper flowers. We will also explain the deep meaning behind the colors and the elements that make up an offering.
The second part delves into the more anthropological aspects of the celebration, exploring the purpose of the offering and the Day of the Dead altar as a tool for coming to terms with the idea of loss. It serves as a way to mourn while allowing us to believe that our loved ones can occupy a special place in our lives where they don’t entirely depart from this earthly plane. It brings them closer to that intimate or public space where we acknowledge the importance and impact they had on our lives.
This workshop is intended for individuals and families experiencing grief and loss. Courtney Aldrich, LICSW, will be in attendance to help support the group navigate conversations about loss and mourning.
Workshop is for adults and families and is free. Registration is required. Please register each participant.
The recommended donation for this workshop is $10.
Cristóbal Sánchez is excited about the opportunity to contribute his passion for cultural sharing through New Art Center’s Community Cultural Days. Being of Mexican nationality and a traveling artist, Cristóbal has seen the process of migration and the need to put his own cultural background out in the world for others.
With a few years of experience in art instruction and a strong background in art teaching, Cristóbal is confident in his ability to make a positive impact on the artistic development of students at New Art Center. Sánchez has also expressed his commitment to contributing to New Art Center’s exceptional artistic community.
Cristóbal is eager to have the opportunity to engage with the students and faculty at New Art Center, and gain a deeper understanding of New Art Center’s institutional values and teaching methodologies.
