We have been having such a great week at art camp, as we dive into Cartoons and Comic Strips!

In 2D, instructor Suzanne Archibald showed examples of cartoon monsters, both cute and scary, scaly and hairy!  They brainstormed a wide range of characteristics and personalities of different monsters and began drafting what their monsters will look like. They’ll continue to create a movie-style poster of their monster, using different drawing techniques, colored pencils, and markers.

Look out! It’s a bearwolf – part bear, part werewolf!

In 3D, our instructor Liz Young is leading the students in creating three-dimensional cartoon characters using materials such as air dry clay, cardboard, and pipe cleaners.  They’ve been brainstorming different traits for their character, including age, likes, dislikes, and exploring how their character’s appearance expresses their personality.  We can’t wait to see these characters come to life!

Students write out the cartoon’s personality traits and plan out the color scheme before constructing them.

Instructor Valerie Szmurlo and her class have been playing with clay in the ceramics studio, starting the week off by creating a cup or vessel inspired by their favorite cartoon or comic book character.  We’ve been seeing lots of Marvel and Spongebob characters!  These creations will be glazed and put in the kiln this week, so we look forward to seeing how they turn out.

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!

Theater instructor Danny Bolton is hard at work directing our student performances.  Some groups are working off a pre-written script based on zany characters and classic stories. Other groups are in the process of writing their own original script.  We are all looking forward to watching the plays together as a camp on Friday!

During recess, students have a chance to create works of art with chalk.

Movement instructor Riley Borst has been leading the students in some image work, where the students use their bodies to create different objects and locations as a group.  They’ve even been asked to embody different superheroes, to show the physicality of characters like Iron Man and the Hulk.  And of course, they’ve been playing lots of active games, like Blob Tag and Four Corners.

Students in the Kahlo group work together to create this banana – see the peels on the side?
