On Saturday, July 22nd, the New Art Center took part in the 8th annual Linda Plaut Newton Festival of the Arts, a two-day event organized by Newton Community Pride in collaboration with the Hyde Community Center, and sponsored by The Village Bank and Kona Ice. The Linda Plaut Festival of the Arts has been a showcase of Newton and regional talent for years and the weekend was full of music and family-friendly entertainment. The Festival was produced by Chris Pitts.

The New Art Center joined the festival for the second day from 11AM to 3PM. We had two booths at the festival: One had pamphlets and catalogs for upcoming classes, and the other had an art activity which was specifically conceptualized for this event. For this craft, people would attempt to make a self portrait of themselves with one continuous line on a sheet of black paper with a white charcoal pencil. This activity was inspired by Elisa Hamilton, who is a Boston-based artist, and her iconic series “UNDERLINE” where she explores her identity as a biracial woman through one-lined portraits.
