Our 2D instructor AJ Jerrett got the students started by drawing self-portraits using colored pencils, markers, and watercolors.  Then they began creating characters that they will use for a board game that they are designing. Later in the week, they’ll be adding in extra cards for the game as well as a spinner to indicate how many moves to make.  Looking forward to playing these original board games!

Which character would you choose to play with in a board game?  I’m going with the dinosaur!

In 3D, instructor Ola Aksan has everyone building a large pair of dice out of cardboard, glue, and tape.  They’ll continue to decorate and refine their dice, and eventually, students will put creative instructions on each side.  Instead of rolling a number, you could roll a material type and object to make.  They’re called Maker’s Dice!

A student holds up two cubes - one purple and one blue - which will become dice.

Students use cardboard, glue, and construction paper to design their Maker’s Dice.

Instructor Valerie Szmurlo and her class have been playing with clay in the ceramics studio, starting the week off by creating a tic tac toe board.  First they developed a design for their board and the sky was the limit!  From cats to pizza, students rolled out and formed their board.  Using the scratch and slip method, they attached the lines to create the tic tac toe.  Later this week, they’ll make playing pieces based on the theme of their board.

Pizza and strawberries and hearts OH MY!

Theater instructor Danny Bolton is hard at work directing our student performances.  Some groups are working off a pre-written script based on poetry, short stories, and folk tales. Other groups are in the process of writing their own original script.  Throughout the week, Danny sprinkles in theater games such as Places, Museum, and Guess in 10.  We are all looking forward to watching the plays together as a camp on Friday!

Before staging their play, students in performance class read through their scripts and mark in their lines.

Movement instructor Carissa Casey has been leading the students in some high energy and fun movement games.  They start every class with physical warm-ups and have been playing games like Pool Noodle Musical Chairs and Race to Vote.  Sounds like they are embracing the Fun and Games theme this week!

A group of children stand with their backs to the camera as they watch the instructor mark up a poster.

Carissa reviews the results of the students’ votes – can you believe more students prefer french fries over pizza?

That’s a wrap for Week 5! We are so grateful to our students, teachers, TA’s, and staff who make summer art camp such a great place to be!

If you are interested in joining us, limited space is available for Week 8 and Week 9. Don’t miss out!
