We’ve been having such a fun week at art camp as we look into Archaeology and Ancient Civilizations.

In 2D, instructor Janet Scudder brought the students back to Ancient Greece as they learned about how Grecians would use pottery and artwork to tell stories.  Throughout the week, the students will carve their own two-dimensional stories by scraping acrylic paint off of their canvas, whether that canvas be a bowl, a plate, or a piece of paper.  Just wait until you see this cool effect!

2D Instructor Janet Scudder demonstrates for the Matisse group how to etch in designs.

In 3D, our instructor Liz Young is leading the students in building sculptures of gods and goddesses, using pipe cleaners, plaster, and air dry clay.  They will be using tempera paint to give these sculptures color.  Later in the week, students will be creating masks, inspired by the magnificent costumes used throughout history in Greek theater.  Big expressions and characterization is a must for these masks!

After drafting up character designs, students in the Warhol group begin to build their sculptures.

Inspired by ancient pottery, Clay instructor Marlee Gleiberman is leading the groups in creating amphoras, also known as Greek water jugs. These works of art will be glazed and put in the kiln later in the week.  Throughout the week, students will use air dry clay to design Greek style coins and columns.  Looking forward to seeing their completed work!

Tuesday is glaze day!  Students must glaze their pottery so it is sealed and shiny.

Theater instructor Riley Borst is hard at work directing our student performances.  Some groups are working off a pre-written script based on Greek mythology and poetry, while other groups are in the process of writing their own original script.  All the students will work together to create props and scenery for their plays and will perform them throughout the day for each other on Friday.

Who doesn’t love a good Greek myth?

Movement instructor Lily Alcala Gordon has been leading the students in some high energy movement games.  This week, the groups have been going on nature walks and playing games like Musical Chairs and Heads Up.  During a nature walk this week, the Hokusai group even decided to put on some gloves and turn their journey into a community clean-up, collecting the rubbish found in the park.  Loving this environmentally friendly crew!

There are only one week of Summer Art Camp at New Art left this season. Have you checked out our fall classes and workshops? We are enrolling now!
