We’ve been having fun in the sun during our Beach Party themed week at art camp!

Our 2D instructor Liz Young started the week off by having the students draft out aquatic characters and developing their characters’ personalities. Later in the week, they will be using mixed media to fully create their character, putting it onto a canvas, and utilizing materials such as colored pencils, crayons, markers, and tempera paint. We’re seeing lots of mermaids, sharks, and dolphins this week.

It’s the summer of mermaids and dolphins – looking forward to seeing this in color!

In 3D, instructor Eric Wyche and the students are totally in beach vacation mode as they construct dream beach houses out of paper and cardboard.  Throughout the week, the groups will continue to build onto their beach houses, while also creating three-dimensional sea creatures out of paper.  The only question is, when can we all go hang out in these beach houses?

Clay instructor Jaclyn Gaffney led the groups in creating clay port holes, as if they were looking out the window of a submarine.  They discussed different kinds of beachy items they might see, such as shells and fish, and used the scratch and slip method to attach them to their port hole.  We’re looking forward to seeing what these will look like after they are glazed and finished in the kiln!

Under the sea…under the sea…

Theater instructor Danny Bolton is hard at work directing our student performances.  Some groups are working off a pre-written script based on poetry, short stories, and folk tales. Other groups are in the process of writing their own original script, first deciding on a play theme and then collaborating to write a three-scene play.  And of course, the students perfect their performance skills by playing theater games such as “Places,” “Museum,” and “Why Are You Late?”

The Warhol group is already learning their staging for their performance on Friday.

Movement instructor Carissa Casey has been leading the students in some high energy and fun movement games.  They start every class with physical warm-ups and have been playing games like Race to Vote, Shipwrecked, and Blind Fishing.  Later in the week, there will definitely be some water games to help cool off in this summer heat!

That’s it for the week! Thanks for joining us.
