We’ve been having a fabulous week at art camp, exploring this week’s theme of Opposites! Students discussed different concepts of opposites throughout the week, including symmetry and asymmetry.

Students in the Ringgold group use watercolor to create their landscapes.

Our 2D instructor AJ Jerrett is leading the students in creating contrasting landscapes.  They started the week off by brainstorming contrasting environments, colors, and shapes.  They practiced sketching these contrasting images by splitting their paper in half.  They will continue their work using watercolor paints to create a landscape and they will eventually attach “opposite” types of characters in that environment.

In 3D, the students are using their construction skills to create lanterns!  Instructor Ola Aksan is guiding them through this multi-step process as they use popsicles, cardboard, paper, plastic wrap and concrete to make these stunning works of art.  The lanterns will show the contrast between light and dark, with images reflected on the sides.

These popsicle stick cubes sit to dry in the concrete before becoming beautiful lanterns.

Clay instructor Jaclyn Gaffney led the groups in creating napkin holders on Monday. The opposing sides of the napkin holder will have contrasting images to go along with our Opposites theme (ie: moon and sun, light and dark, etc).  These napkin holders will be glazed and put right into the kiln this week.  As the week continues, groups will use air dry clay to create a loom which they will thread yarn through.  Think soft vs hard, minimalistic vs complex.

Imagine bright and shiny colors on these napkin holders – can’t wait to see how they come out!

Theater instructor Danny Bolton is hard at work directing our student performances.  Some groups are working off a pre-written script based on folk tales and short stories. Other groups are in the process of writing their own original script.  All the students will work together to create props and scenery for their plays and will perform them throughout the day for each other on Friday.

Movement instructor Carissa Casey has been leading the students in some high energy and movement games.  They start every class with physical warm-ups and have been playing games like Giant Twister and Opposites Relay Race.  Movement class will also include some water games like Drip Drip Drop – you don’t want to be in the splash zone for this one!

Stretch it out and touch those toes!

Thanks for joining us for a week of opposites! We can’t quite believe that we only have 3 weeks of camp left this summer! Are you on our mailing list? Sign up to receive updates on new classes and be the first to know when we release our registration for Summer 2024!
